Cost of Main Electrical Service Upgrade for Residential Homes:
The price range for updating the main electrical service in a home is dependent on many factors. A few important things to consider when estimating the total dollar amount you will pay are equipment costs, inspector & permit fees, and the size of the upgrade.
- Equipment Costs: Now more than ever, the price of electrical equipment is fluctuating. You will most likely need a new meter socket, electrical panel, breakers and wire among other things. - Inspector and Permit Fees: The utility company that supplies electricity to your home requires a Third-Party Inspector to approve the completed service any time work is done to your main entry supply. The inspector’s fee is normally $100-200 depending on the area you live in and the size of the upgrade. The borough or township that you live in may also require a permit to be obtained before any work is performed on your property. These fees can range from $100-250.
- Service Upgrade Size: The size of the new panel and number of circuits will determine the amount of time and labor it will take to complete the project. The starting point for a complete new Electrical Service is $1500 and can vary greatly depending on your specific circumstances.

Process of Upgrading the Main Electrical Service in Residential Homes:
We understand that your time is valuable and the inconvenience of electricity interruption in your home. Listed below are the steps you can expect when replacing your electric service and panel.
- Consultation: The first step is scheduling a time for us to come out and analyze the project. We can usually come out to your property within a few days.
- Pricing: Next, we will determine the parts and equipment needed to complete the job and price those for you.
- Paperwork: Once you have agreed to the total price of the project, we will obtain a work order number from your utility company, complete the necessary permit steps (if any) and schedule the day/time that the service will be performed.
- The Day of Service: In most cases, we are able to complete the upgrade within one day and have your electricity restored before we leave. You can expect to lose power for 4-6 hours while the job is being completed. If you have any special medical equipment that cannot be without power for an extended period of time, let us know. We can usually accommodate this.
- Inspection: A Third-Party Inspector will schedule a visit within the next couple of days – or in some cases the same day. They will inspect the service performed and sign off on the completed project. Your utility company will be notified when this is complete.
